It has been a transformative time, and there’s no better way to say goodbye (for now!) as I return to London next week.
Rooted in my diasporic experience between London and Morocco, this project explores identity, nostalgia, and a spiritual longing within contemporary contexts.
The works transform traditional zellige patterns into three-dimensional ceramic forms. Each incision distorts familiar geometrical archetypes, fragmented recognitions acting as metaphors for diasporic displacement.
Since being in Morocco the last few months, the meanings have truly deepened where every cut and incision into the extruded clay has felt like a cut from my own core, as if pieces of my soul were being revealed.
The work engages with Islamic geometry, reimagining its presence in today’s world and is crafted with red clay from the Ourika region, near the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.
