Work by @hassanhajjaj_larache is included in « Imagining Black Diasporas: 21st-Century Art and Poetics, » a survey connecting the practices of over 60 artists at @lacma.
This exhibition expands the traditional Pan-African canon, debuting new acquisitions for the Museum and further bridging diasporic geographies. « Imagining Black Diasporas » considers a quarter-century of art history, and the creativity that has sprung from and been necessitated by diasporic movement.
On view in the exhibition is Hajjaj’s « Caravane » (2011), a portrait of Helen Epega, a Nigerian singer-songwriter who performs as The Venus Bushfires
(@thevenusbushfires). She stands with her back to the viewer, one hand behind her back in a peace sign and the other holding a hang drum. Hajjaj captures vibrant and irreverent portraits of musicians and celebrities he admires, bringing them into his aesthetic and cultural world through styling and staging
