These pictures show the source of some of the really special red clay I have been working with from the Ourika region, by the Atlas mountains in Morocco.
The rich presence of iron oxide and hematite gives the Ourika clay its unique and distinctive bright orange/red colour. I was pleasantly surprised to find some other natural pigments such as yellow ochres in some of the rock and clay formations.
The Ourika valley has a unique geological composition that shapes this clay, layering centuries of erosion and minerals. It’s a material deeply tied to Moroccan ceramics, adobe architecture, cosmetics and natural pigments.
