MEET THE DESIGNER – PAUL MOUSTAPHA LEDRON
As part of the second cohort of designers-in-residence, following a program that I have the pleasure to lead with @alghazzawi.ali – curated by @dominiquepetit_ – and launched in 2023 as a partnership between the Royal Commission for AlUla @artsalula and the French Agency for AlUla Development @horizonalula under the leadership of @kh1co (Hamad AlHomiedan), we welcomed @paul.ledron, whose residency unfolds as a poetic response with the temporal, cultural, and ecological rhythms of the AlUla oasis.
The result is a constellation of objects designed and manufactured in Saudi Arabia from a mix of black-dyed meranti and sandiyan wood. A vertical lamp crowned with handmade palm paper tiles filters light like a sun-dappled canopy; a daybed upholstered in hand-quilted cyanotype fabric transforms sun-exposed textile fragments into a cushioned surface for semi-upright repose; and a triangular incense altar composed of freestanding benches, a perforated chimney, and a ceramic drawer releases scent in slow intervals, its brass inlays tracing ephemeral paths.
« In AlUla, I focused my practice on experimenting with materials from the oasis.
I used them in cyanotype, pushing the limits of this process shifting its usual deep blues toward sun-faded, sand-colored tones.
I also adapted the Japanese washi technique to make paper from palm leaves, an abundant resource in which I see potential for new uses. »
