In October 1994, a man at Microsoft booted up a preview build and watched a cartoon dog explain the software in Times New Roman. He thought that was wrong. Three days later he had drawn a font to fix it, with a mouse, on a screen with no anti-aliasing, for a product that never shipped it.

Comic Sans has been the internet’s most reliable punchline for thirty years.

Vincent Connare wasn’t a Swiss modernist with a theory of the grid. He was a typographic engineer who hinted bitmap fonts and fixed Baltic character sets in Excel. He was given a brief, he met it, and then Microsoft put his font on every computer on earth alongside ten other faces, not one of which could be described as warm. What happened next was a distribution decision, not a design failure.
