The Lie About Your Keyboard
Head to https://gamma.yt.link/vjndYN5 to check out GAMMA 5 and start designing today!
Every keyboard you’ve ever typed on starts with Q, W, E, R, T, Y. In 1985, an economist argued that layout was a historical accident the world couldn’t undo, and that a better design from the 1930s, the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, had been shut out ever since. Five years later, two other economists called that story a fable.
This video follows the keyboard from a Milwaukee machine shop in the 1860s, through telegraph offices, the Remington factory in Ilion, New York, and the typing contests of the 1880s, to August Dvorak’s decades-long campaign to replace it. Along the way: Christopher Latham Sholes, Mark Twain’s first typewritten letter, a Navy study with a conflict of interest, and what the research actually says about whether Dvorak is faster.
